“Why Ritual Matters,” August 15, 2021
For our August 15th Gallery View Sunday, the topic is “Why Ritual Matters.” Bill Heavlin provides a short introduction on some of our more common UU traditional rituals—the Flower Communion, Water Communion, Burning Bowl, and others. Then we watch a short video by Dr. Andrew Mark Henry on the topic. The discussion following involves questions on your favorite UU rituals and about other moving rituals. And in typical UU fashion, we also invite people to agree or disagree with the assertion that there is a place for ritual in modern times.
Dr. Andrew has worked on the forefront of online religious literacy education as the host and founder of the religious studies YouTube channel, Religion for Breakfast, with over 155 videos and 329,000 subscribers. Religion for Breakfast approaches religion as an academic subject through the lenses of sociology, anthropology, history, and cognitive science.
